Chiefs out to avoid yet another Nedbank Cup embarrassment after last 16 draw

Soweto giants Kaizer Chiefs will be aiming to avoid yet another shock upset to a lower division rival after being drawn against an in-form Casric Stars in the Nedbank Cup last 16.

Chiefs are drawn against Casric Stars, who lead the league standings in their bid for automatic promotion to the DStv Premiership from the Motsepe Foundation Championship.

Casric were formed after purchasing the status of Free State Stars and relocated the franchise of Ea Lla Koto at the beginning of the current season.

The club were originally formed in 2012, and use the Solomon Mahlangu stadium as their home ground and have retired footballers Paulus Masehe and Thabo Nthethe as members of their technical team.

Being a lower division club, means they are overwhelming underdogs against Chiefs but will be encouraged by previous well-known cup upsets.

In 2009, Chiefs were shocked by then NFD club Pretoria University 4-3 at the same stage in a game in which Jimmy Tau had a nightmare.

The following year it was another humiliation for Amahhosi against another NFD club from Cape Town who upset the men from Naturena 2-0.

Then for the third year running it was an embarrassment for Chiefs, this time going down to third tier club Baroka in what remains one of the biggest shock results of the Nedbank Cup.

In the 2014/15 season, Chiefs fell to Black Leopards – then playing in the NFD and then had a scare two years later in grinding their way past third tier club Acornbush United.

TS Galaxy – then playing in the NFD – disgraced Chiefs in the 2019 final to become the first club from the lower division to lift the trophy.

Two years ago, Richards Bay also their slice of the fame when they came in from the NFD to break Chiefs hearts in the last 32 with a 2-1 win.

With such a discouraging record against lower division clubs in the Nedbank Cup, this could turn to be yet another dry season for Chiefs as the league title is already out of their hands.
