Chiefs’ decade-long wait stamped

Kaizer Chiefs' 10-year-long wait for silverware has been confirmed after they exited the Carling Knockout at the quarterfinals stage on Saturday.

The Carling Knockout will now also count as the first trophy that Nasreddine Nabi failed to win.

With what happened at FNB Stadium against Mamelodi Sundowns, the consequences are that the next trophy possibility for Chiefs can only happen next year in May when the Betway Premiership season ends, and the Nedbank Cup final is played.

Amakhosi have since played 360 matches in different competitions since they last had a taste of trophy happiness, which happened on May 9, 2015.

Ten years is the longest that any of the Big Three has ever had to wait in the PSL years with Orlando Pirates having gone seven years in the dark, while for Mamelodi Sundowns it was six years of pain.

Whatever happens for the rest of the season, it will mean the clock will have touched a decade since Chiefs last won a trophy.

This is down to the fact that the two remaining competitions that they still have a chance of winning will be decided in May 2025.

The Naturena-based side have come short in the league nine times, then MTN8 (eight times), League Cup (seven times), Nedbank Cup (nine times), CAF Champions League (twice) and the CAF Confederation Cup.

Through the barren years, Steve Komphela, Giovanni Solinas, Ernst Middendorp, Gavin Hunt, Stuart Baxter, Arthur Zwane, Molefi Ntseki and Cavin Johnson have all failed the trophy test.
