‘Chiefs were offered Mayele, and he wanted to join’

With Kaizer Chiefs still thin and in desperate need of a reliable gunman, the details relating to how Fitson Mayele's proposed move to the club fell through have been revealed.

Mayele was on his way to finishing as the 2022/23 Tanzania Premier League Golden Boot winner when Chiefs were made aware of the Congolese's desire to play in the PSL.

The dreadlocked striker ended up with 17 league goals for Young Africans, plus another 14 in the CAF Club competitions, which ultimately ignited wildfire interest, before he ended up at Pyramids.

The 30-year-old has kept the goals coming and is the leading scorer with 14 goals (plus five assists) in the Egyptian Premier League, where Pyramids have fizzled out in the title race.

"I had a mandate from Mayele to get him into the top clubs in the PSL, and I did offer the player to Chiefs because that was one of the clubs he wanted," discloses local agent Rui Frois, talking to KickOff.

"I can only suppose that the issue was affordability at the time for Chiefs because there was a transfer fee that needed to be paid before his personal terms.

"But fact still stands that Chiefs were offered Mayele, and he wanted to join them.

"Those in authority at Chiefs know that they had a chance to get Mayele a long time ago before Pyramid put their big offer to Yanga (Young Africans).

"The boy really wanted to come to South Africa for the obvious reason that he has his own Congolese people here already and his family wouldn't have issues.

"His kids will have gotten into school easily and the family would have settled easy, making it easy for him to shine on the field.

"At that time, there was talk that (Nasreddine) Nabi was coming to Chiefs, so it would have made it easy to continue working under a coach that he worked with at Yanga," says Frois.

With Nabi now at Chiefs, Mayele's name has been mentioned again, but it will take Amakhosi moving mountains to meet Pyramids' demands for the former AS Vita hitman.
