PROOF: Nabi turning to winners for lift at Chiefs

The first step taken by Nasreddine Nabi with the line of foreign-born players arriving at Kaizer Chiefs is pointing towards a direction of having winners at the club.

Nabi has felt the weight and strain on his shoulders of adopting a squad thin on winners and at a club whose trophy culture has been diluted by what has happened in the last nine years.

From having been serial silverware hunters in the past, Chiefs have found their dressing room getting weaker over the years upon mention of lifting trophies.

Itumeleng Khune was the last departure of those that have won silverware at the club.

Nabi has combed through his squad to detail and in seeking answers already has Gaston Sirino and Fiacre Ntwari, with Inacio Miguel on his way in, from the list of foreign-born players brought to the club.

Sirino is a trophy magnet having won the league at Club Bolivar, before adding another seven titles in a row at Mamelodi Sundowns, where he collected two Nedbank Cup trophies, the MTN8 and the African Football League.

The 33-year-old will hope his success will be used as a torch through the trophy darkness that has engulfed Chiefs since 2015.

Rwandan keeper Ntwari was signed after spending a season at TS Galaxy but knows what trophies are from his time back home.

Ntwari won silverware with both APR and AS Kigali, before missing out in the final of the Carling Knockout with Galaxy last season.

APR is the most successful club in Rwanda and so Ntwari knows what being with a club pregnant with expectations entails.

Then with the new man in the house Miguel – he has spent the last 18 months lifting two league titles at Petro de Luanda.

Being at Petro always guarantees success and Miguel has enjoyed that along with playing in the CAF Champions League and African Football League.

The 28-year-old, whose last deal was brokered courtesy of Mario Daniel's business mind, has previously played in the UEFA Conference League qualifiers with Latvian club FK Liepaja and in the second tier of Portuguese football.
