Amakhosi's 'we want Pirates' chorus revived

An ex-Kaizer Chiefs defender believes the revitalized Soweto giants have a strong chance of lifting the Nedbank Cup trophy after making light work of Chippa United.

Chiefs have advanced to the quarterfinals of the Nedbank Cup after a impressive 3-0 victory over Chippa at FNB Stadium on Saturday.

According to Derrick Spencer, who represented the side between 2004 and 2008, good times are around the corner at Naturena.

"Amakhosi has returned to form. Abuyile Amakhosi! The Nedbank Cup has 'Amakhosi' written all over it," says a beaming Spencer.

"There were many positives from the game against Chippa. The new signings are making a difference, and I believe they will continue to improve."

He is particularly impressed by Nasreddine Nabi no longer being overly reliant on the likes of Mduduzi Shabalala and Mfundo Vilakazi, instead using them in the second half.

"We need experience in our team, and it's evident with the signings we've made. I believe these experienced players will guide the younger ones effectively."

Spencer expressed his desire to face arch-rivals Orlando Pirates first in the quarterfinals, with hopes of meeting another fellow big side in the final.

"We have a score to settle with Pirates. They know they didn't truly beat us last time. We felt robbed in that match. We want to come out strong against them.

"Chiefs are not yet a fully functioning team, but they are on the right track. Things are definitely looking up, for a change. It has been a while since a Chiefs team has given us hope.

"Credit goes to the management and the coach for their collaborative efforts.

"So, let's take down Pirates first and then finish off Sundowns in the final. Our team is now well-balanced."

The quarterfinals draw is on Monday at 18:00.
