Dove's spirit of a fighter to earn him new deal at Chiefs

History has it that people from the province of Gaza in Mozambique are identified as fighters.

On the political front this is where the late Samora Machel hailed from and this where Joaquim Chissano has his roots.

This is also where Kaizer Chiefs defender Edmilson Dove comes from.

Dove is the man who joined at the beginning of the 2022/23 season on a free transfer from UD Songo where he had played for six months after his surprise departure from Cape Town City.

The 29-year-old is now on a fight to earn a new contract at Chiefs with his current contract up at the end of June 2024.

AmaKhosi have an option of another.

"Dove is from Gaza and one distinguishing characteristic is that they are fighters.

"I don't know Dove on a personal level, but people from where he comes from are identified as warriors.

"They represent the man who fears nothing and can stand up to any challenge," says Tomas Inguane, who is a retired Mozambican international who played for Orlando Pirates and BidVest Wits.

Dove scored the winner on Wednesday evening in his first start this season and is a face that Inguane is familiar with from Clube Ferroviario de Maputo where he also played.

"I know him from Ferroviario and remember a fighter about him even though he played a creative role down the left flank.

"While here, he mostly played as a left-back which is a position that I believe he enjoys even though he can also fit in playing central defence.

"Players like him understand the system of coaches and will do a job for you anywhere and I'm proud of the progress that he has made in his career," says Inguane.

For all the traits that define Dove, the current season has so much to determine about his future after becoming only the second Mozambican to play for Chiefs in the PSL era years after Jossias Macamo.

The subject of his contract at Chiefs will be up for discussion as the deal that he signed upon joining in August 2022 runs up at the end of June 2024.

AmaKhosi have an option of a further year on the Mozambican who is definite to be in The Mambas squad for the AFCON finals due to run from January 13 to February 11 in Cote d'Ivoire.

Being at the AFCON will present him with a window of opportunity to market himself to a wider audience.
