Chiefs sink struggling Swallows in Soweto derby

Kaizer Chiefs jumped to fifth spot on the DStv Premiership standings with a 2-1 win over Swallows FC in the Soweto Derby on Wednesday night.

Keagan Dolly was rewarded for the impact off the bench for the Amakhosi against AmaZulu on Sunday and replaced Sithebe, while Reeve Frosler came in for Dillon Solomons at right-back.

As it happened | Swallows 1-2 Kaizer Chiefs

Dolly nearly continued from where he left off last time out, as his snap-shot from a clever angle in the area sailed across the face of goal.

The Amakhosi still had the clearer of chances midway in the first half where Yusuf Maart volleyed a loose ball from a cross on the right over target from close proximity.

Chiefs made their dominant spell count nine minutes to halftime when Bonfils-Caleb Bimenyimana sneaked in at the near post and headed home Kgaogelo Sekgota's cross for his third goal of the season.

The Dube Birds remained calm despite trailing and almost snatched the equaliser through a first-time shot outside the box by Lindokuhle Mtshali, but it went wide.

However, Chiefs managed to bag a second goal on the stroke of halftime when a free-kick on the edge of the area by Dolly nestled beyond Tshabalala.

Musa Nyatama's side continued to lack of confidence early in the second half and nearly conceded a third from a snap effort in the area by Zitha Kwinika, but Tshabalala saved.

The Dube Birds nonetheless picked up the pieces and began to question the Amakhosi when Stydom Wambi's looping header from Waseem Isaacs' cross sailed wide.

Swallows got a lifeline midway through the second half as the self-same Isaacs turned home a pin-point cross from Tshidiso Patjie, whilst Mwape Musonda entered.

Indeed, the host were fired up and nearly had the equalizer when captain Wandisile Letlabika headed a promising corner off against the woodwork.

The Amakhosi though managed the final exchanges well and in the end picked up the three points and their first win away from home this season.
