Ex-Downs captain advises Zungu over Chiefs

Former Mamelodi Sundowns captain Hlompho Kekana says he is surprised that a player of Bongani Zungu's calibre remains unsigned, and has offered advice to the midfielder on where to go next.

Zungu was tipped to join Rulani Mokwena's Wydad Casablanca side and had spent around two weeks under assessment with the North African outfit.

However, the Bafana Bafana international is understood to be back on home soil with talks over the move reportedly having broken down.

Speaking on SABC Sports SoccerZone, Kekana explained why he believes the experienced player would not be a fit for Kaizer Chiefs at the moment.

"Here at home, why can't we sign a player like Bongani? Of that quality? I don't know. I am a bit worried when I look at a player of Bongani's calibre struggling to find a team here at home," Kekana said.

"I believe so many teams need him. There are a lot of teams that I believe need his experience.

"I was going to say Kaizer Chiefs, but since he has not played for... how many months? Six months. He didn't do pre-season. I don't think he will fit at Chiefs at this moment.

"Maybe go to a team like Polokwane City and revive yourself. I see Xola Mlambo had not played for two years and he came back with Marumo Gallants trying to revive himself.

"I think Bongani Zungu just needs to take that path and come back stronger," added the man from Zebediela.

Zungu has long been linked with a move to Amakhosi, although club Sporting Director Kaizer Motaung Jr. has publicly denied reports of the club having an interest in the Duduza-born star.

The player himself has previously denied holding any talks with the Soweto giants.

With Edson Castillo out of action owing to a long-term injury, however, it remains to be seen if Chiefs would be tempted to make a move for 'Ben 10'.
