Haskins: No one will replace Khune

Retired footballer and now television pundit Mark Haskins says there's never been a situation where a goalkeeper comes in at Kaizer Chiefs and is the number one.

Revered goalkeeper Itumeleng Khune have in the last couple of seasons struggled to play a consistent number of matches due to injuries amongst other elements.

In seasons gone by, the likes of Virgil Vries, Daniel Akpeyi, Bruce Bvuma and lately Brandon Petersen have taken the gloves and played a big portion of matches at the club.

Khune has featured three times in all competitions this season and was on the losing side in all– the last a 2-1 defeat to Golden Arrows in interim coach Cavin Johnson's debut.

"Everyone knows they are filling in until Khune is okay, so nobody is set in that position. Nobody is really going to win that position and make it their own, they are filling that position until Khune is okay to play," Haskins told Sports Night Amplified with Andile.

Back in the 2014/15 season, now retired goalkeeper Brilliant Khuzwayo deputised for Khune who was out injured at the time and was pivotal in their league and MTN8 success that campaign.

He never got to make the position his own and was relegated to the bench the minute Khune recovered and was fit to play.

"Even when Khuzwayo was there. He played substantially, but was he the number one? He was a brilliant goalkeeper in his own right, but he was never the number one," Haskins said.

After a weekend rest, Chiefs are back in action on Wednesday and welcome Cape Town Spurs behind closed doors following crowd trouble recently.
