In this edition of How I Became A Goalkeeper, KickOff catches up with former Mamelodi Sundowns, Free State Stars, and Witbank Aces goalkeeper Joseph Sibiya.
These days the retired Sibiya is a businessman who owns a driving school in his home province of Mpumalanga.
I'm sure you have an interesting story to tell about how you became a goalkeeper.
"I was a top striker; let me say I played in all positions during my amateur days, that was until my coaches at youth level decided to try me in goals, that was during a pre-season tournament in Ngodini.
"I remember our opponents getting a penalty in that tournament in Ngodini, and to my surprise I saved it. I was with a team called Top Pool Spurs. That's the day I decided to stick to the goalkeeper position.
"Not realizing there were scouts from the old KaNgwane Homelands League, it was in that tournament where they scouted me for some team.
"From there that team combined with Oriental Spurs and formed a squad, and we played a friendly match against Witbank Aces at Kabokweni. After that match, Aces invited me to join them, and as they say, the rest is history."
And growing up who are some of the goalkeepers you looked up to?
"William Shongwe was my idol, I used to be a Kaizer Chiefs fan back then. We used to go to Ellis Park Stadium once in a year to watch the Iwisa Charity Cup. I used to go there just to watch William Shongwe. He was a very streetwise keeper. I'd be very upset if I found that it was Gary Bailey instead who'd be in goals [laughs], and that was funny because people at home were calling me Gary Bailey. And that time, he was not even my favourite."
Who are some of the goalkeepers playing today, who are your favourites?
"To be honest, no-one. Since the likes of Itumeleng Khune have hung up their gloves, I don't have a favourite.
"Denis Onyango tried but couldn't reach the level. Maybe this season, someone will raise his hand."
