'Individual errors' behind Khune, Kwinika exclusion, vindicated Zwane reveals

A vindicated Arthur Zwane revealed that individual errors were behind the exclusion of duo Itumeleng Khune and Zitha Kwinika as Kaizer Chiefs got back to winning ways over Royal AM.

Chiefs recorded a morale-boosting 2-0 win over Royal AM as Zwane made four changes from the team that lost to Mamelodi Sundowns the previous week.

Brandon Petersen, Siyethemba Sithebe, Mduduzi Shabalala, and Siyabonga Ngezana were all introduced to impressive effect as Chiefs recorded their first win and goals in 2023.

"When it comes to Itu and Kwinika, as I said before we have been playing very well but unfortunately when you look at the goals that we conceded it was individual errors, not team mistakes," Zwane added.

Kwinika and Khune were both at fault in recent defeats to Sekhukhune United and AmaZulu that heaped pressure on Zwane.

"So, those things they do happen and so we had to make changes here and there because we have a big squad and had to give other players the opportunity as well to showcase their talent and they responded positively.

"If you look at this game and many other games there was no difference.

"The only difference today was the score-line and that we managed to take our chances.

"Having said that it is not because they (Khune and Kwinika) performed badly.

"If you look at Mduduzi, we missed Nkosingiphile due to injury and we decided to start with Mduduzi and last time we saw Sithebe when he came on.

"So, we created that competition where everyone will show hunger to go in there and compete and so far, they have responded positively all of them," says Zwane who has fresh injury concerns in Reeve Frosler and Dillan Solomons at right-back.

"What is a worrying factor is losing two players in the right back position.

"It is definitely a worrying factor but as coaches we have to come with a plan going forward.

"That has been our problem…whenever the team starts doing well, we lose key players due to injuries or unforeseen circumstances.

"We are unfortunate when it comes to that, but we will have to come with a plan when it comes to that because we have a good squad," he adds.
