Zwane not giving up on Chiefs' league race

Kaizer Chiefs head coach Arthur Zwane has thrown in the towel in his pursuit to win the DStv premiership this season.

Amakhosi succumbed to their third league defeat in succession after losing 1-0 to Mamelodi Sundowns at the FNB stadium on Saturday.

The Soweto giants now remain in position 6 on the log and 22 points behind leaders Sundowns after playing 17 games so far this season.

Zwane says that his team will now fight for second place in order to qualify for the CAF Champions League football next season. "I still want to go and play in the Champions League next season. I tasted it when I was assistant coach, I think two seasons ago, I want to go back there", said Zwane in a post-match.

"That will help our boys to grow, and that will help our players as well to know how it is to compete at that level because some of those players must come back and represent the country at international level.

"It is equally important for us to participate at that level, we will push for the second spot if we can't get anything but I think the second spot is realistic, yes the team has not been winning cups for many years, but the Nedbank (Cup Tournament) we will give our utmost as well and make sure we go all the way and win it if we can," he added.

Chiefs last won a trophy in 2015 when they snatched the league trophy under coach Stuart Baxter.
