Kaizer Chiefs identify alternate Luke Fleurs defensive target to reinforce squad

Kaizer Chiefs have reportedly identified a backup defensive option if a purported move for primary target SuperSport United defender Luke Fleurs fails to materialise.

Chiefs could potentially turn to AmaZulu youngster Sandile Khumalo as a second option to reinforce their defence in the fast-approaching January window.

Initial reports suggest that Matsatsantsa have rebuffed Chiefs' initial approach for with club boss Stan Matthews putting a "not for sale" tag on the player.

Khumalo meanwhile, currently has just six months remaining on his contract with Usuthu and is free to sign a pre-contract agreement in January.

According to a source close to the Durban-based outfit, the club has already tabled an offer to extend the player's stay.

"Khumalo's contract with AmaZulu is due to expire in June. There are two teams in Gauteng that are very interested to sign him," a source within AmaZulu tells KickOff.

"AmaZulu are making efforts to extend his contract. They have already submitted a new offer and are waiting for the player to respond. AmaZulu could also lose midfielder Makhehleni Makhaula to Orlando Pirates when the transfer window period re-opens in January.
