‘Khune has my respect here in Brazil'

Whatever final decision Kaizer Chiefs make with regards to Itumeleng Khune's contract his footprint and legendary status will always spread far and wide.

Besides having spent all his professional career at Kaizer Chiefs, Khune has played at every major tournament – the FIFA World Cup, Confederations Cup, and AFCON finals.

His list of opponents has included Cristiano Ronaldo, Robert Lewandowski, Fernando Torres, Robinho, and Luis Suarez amongst several others, and it is no coincidence that his is even of interest.

"So, what is going to happen with Khune?" was the question from Brazilian Marcos 'Pepe' de Jesus on Wednesday.

The response explained that he remains under contract until June 30 and is due to have meetings with Chiefs to decide on his future.

'Pepe' has fond memories of Chiefs having scored a brace on debut against them playing for BidVest Wits.

Though it was Rowen Fernandez in goals on that September afternoon in 2006, the Brazilian took interest when Khune took over as first choice the following year.

"Even though I scored my first two goals in South African against Fernandez, I did play against Khune afterwards.

"I might have left South Africa before the 2010 World Cup, but I still remember Khune very well plus he played for Bafana Bafana when they had Carlos Alberto Parreira and Joel Santana.

"He was a very good goalkeeper who I still have the utmost respect for up to this day.

"I have always wished him all the success because he deserves it.

"Khune has my respect here in Brazil and that is why I even follow him on social media.

"That is how much loved Khune is by most of us.

"But then this being football, there comes a time when we must make decisions even though he made history and will always be remembered.

"It is a shame because he continues to perform at a high level.

"He is a legend," says the retired striker who now works as a security supervisor in Sao Paulo.
