Midfielder's time at Chiefs handed lifeline?

Having recently returned from an injury, a midfielder's time at Kaizer Chiefs is understood to have been handed a lifeline ahead of the second half of the season.

George Matlou joined Amakhosi at the start of the 22/23 season as part of a three-man package including Dillon Solomons and Kamohelo Mahlatsi from Moroka Swallows.

By the end of that season, the attacking midfielder's fate seemed sealed, having made just three starts for Amakhosi, while Mahlatsi would leave the club on a mutual termination.

The additions of Mduduzi Mdantsane, the return of Nkosingiphile Ngcobo to action and the emergence of Mduduzi Shabalala also all but spelt the end of Matlou's time with the Soweto giants.

Matlou, however, made use of his chances under Ntseki, putting in a string of impressive performances both in pre-season and the start of the 23/24 season, enough to prompt the club's hierarchy to consider an extension.

The 25-year-old has made 10 appearances this season and although yet another injury has robbed Matlou of extending his impressive run, the noise coming out of Naturena is that the his efforts have done enough to buy him more time to prove his worth at the Village, and a new deal could be on the horizon.

"He's been unlucky with injuries, especially last season. But credit to George because this season he's worked very hard to show his quality and try to convince the club that he should be here. It's up to management, but it looks like he will be staying," an insider told KickOff.

Meanwhile, Chiefs return to competitive action when they host TS Galaxy on 13 February.
