Every Monday we get in touch with a former player, and they share a memorable muthi story from their playing careers.
In this edition of My Muthi Story, we hear from former Kaizer Chiefs, Moroka Swallows and Mpumalanga Black Aces defender Gordon Gilbert on his Muthi experiences.
Who and where?
"I was very lucky I didn't have a lot of muthi situations in my football career.
"At Swallows, there was Bra Junior, do you know that guy? I wonder if he is still alive.
"He used to use a lot of muthi you would come into the dressing room it was so smoky you couldn't see even your own hands.
"He was our kit manager. He used to wet our soccer boots. We would play in a wet kit.
"He was a cool guy who was busy, always hardworking making sure all your jerseys were neat. Your towels, your socks, your shin guards, he would wash and clean your soccer boots. And obviously believed in a lot of muthi.
"I think Jomo Sono loves muthi and look where they are now. So, you tell me if it works."
Why were you doing it?
"I came to respect the culture and understand why people were doing it. I understood that people see value and belief in that type of thing. I kind of knew that people were believing in it.
"But for me, it didn't change me, it didn't bother me."
What did you have to do?
"We didn't really do much as players, and at Chiefs it was quite very relaxed also, you just wash in water that had some remedy, and some sort of plants or herbs. But I mean it wasn't over the top, it wasn't uncomfortable.
"At Aces, there wasn't any witchcraft or muthi."
Did everyone take part?
"Ja, you don't really have a choice. If you get inside a dressing room and it's full of smoke, you are definitely part of it directly or indirectly."
What stood out for you?
"Is that other teams like Swallows, and Cosmos really take muthi very seriously?
"Perhaps more intimidating when people go to a goalpost with a bottle. Those captured our imagination of course.
"I was very lucky muthi never affected me in any way you know."
What was the result?
"If it works those guys who use muthi would win every single time and that's never the case.
"So, for me, it's a lot of nonsense it doesn't work, but I respect it. I respect those who believe in it but for me, there is nothing in it."
