Chiefs on to 36th trophy attempt

Nasreddine Nabi will find himself flooded with questions about ending the trophy drought as Kaizer Chiefs set foot into this season's Nedbank Cup.

Chiefs start their campaign with a home match against third-tier league club Free Agents FC at FNB Stadium on Sunday evening.

The significance of that fixture will be overshadowed by how long the Soweto giants have gone without lifting silverware.

By the time the dates change to the month of May, it will have been 10 years on the dot since Amakhosi celebrated a trophy success.

Throughout that time, they have missed the trophy target on 35 occasions.

Chiefs have come short in the league nine times, then MTN8 (seven times), Carling Knockout (seven times), and Nedbank Cup (nine times).

They have also been involved in the CAF Champions League twice without lifting the trophy and came stuck in the CAF Confederation Cup during the 2018/19 season.

Of note is the fact that through this period of their drought, they have come within minutes of winning the league and have been losing finalists in the Champions League, MTN8, Telkom Knockout (now Carling Knockout), and Nedbank Cup.

Just to prove how long Chiefs have waited for silverware, they no longer have anyone in their squad who has won a trophy with the club before.

Their league failures have meant 284 league games without a trophy on the domestic front.

The Glamour Boys have also played another 84 games in all cup competitions locally and on the continent throughout that period without landing silverware.

Considering that Chiefs already sit 12 points behind leaders Mamelodi Sundowns – who have played two games less – the Betway Premiership title is already out of their hands before the halfway stage.

This leaves the Nedbank Cup as the best push for a trophy this season, and Nabi will be constantly given reminders about the fact that he carries the hopes of the long-suffering Khosi Nation in matters relating to trophies.

What hurts the side is that Sundowns have now surpassed them as the most successful club through the PSL era years, while their biggest rivals Orlando Pirates are also breathing down their necks having won five trophies since Jose Riveiro's arrival.
