Negotiating Behind The Scenes - Kanga Nzenza

On the latest edition of Negotiating Behind the Scenes, former Kaizer Chiefs forward Kanga Nzenza reveals how he signed with the club without being involved in the negotiations.

Who I signed for…

"Kaizer Chiefs in 1995."

How did you find out?

"From some agent in DRC, Kaizer Chiefs they saw me in one of the games. I was playing for the national team in Swaziland, and I was young.

"Then after that game in Swaziland, I heard they were looking for me. When I came to Kaizer Chiefs for assessment there were players like Pollen Ndlanya, Mike Maringa, Jerry Mthethwa and Fortune Koloba. It was not easy."

Where did you meet?

"The coach was Augusto Palacios, the assistant coach was Trott Moloto, and Screamer Tshabalala was the director of coaching.

"So, me I met them here at Kaizer Chiefs training."

Who was there?

"During the negotiations I was not even there I was so young. There was a guy from Congo who negotiated on my behalf, I was so young my job was to play, and I didn't know English or anything.

"They didn't want to waste time. I just put pen to paper and signed, then the next thing they said Kaizer Chiefs signed a young boy and he is very good."

What surprised you?

"From the league, I was coming from in Congo, I was surprised by the club's so many supporters."

Did you get what you wanted?

"I didn't like it, but I just wanted to play.

"No, I didn't get what I wanted, they decided everything for me. What I was getting was good, but with the way I was playing, it was supposed to be a bit more.

"But they did a good thing for me Chiefs, they gave me a job. And at that time, we were sponsored by Iwisa. Every month we would get a big bag of mealie meals for each player."

Did you see out the contract?

"The contract was three years, but I stayed only one season with the club, and I was sold to Peru."

What would you change?

"I would change first the accommodation, there are many things I'd change hey, the accommodation…first I was in a hostel in town, and after that, they gave me accommodation in Berea. But I enjoyed every minute of my stay at Kaizer Chiefs."
