New winning formula at Chiefs revealed

Kaizer Chiefs could finally have the building blocks of a consistent team, which they lacked before new signings came on board.

Chiefs have been playing well and creating chances this term, though the finishing has left a lot to be desired, coupled with the lack of keeping clean sheets.

As a result, too too many points have been dropped.

The side kept only their third clean sheet of the season in the league after a narrow 1-0 win over Stellenbosch FC thanks to new signing Makabi Lilepo this past Friday.

It turns out that on two of the three occasions they kept a clean sheet, the team had Reeve Frosler and Thatayaone Ditlhokwe in the fullback positions, with the central defence pairing of Inacio Miguel and Rushwin Dortley.

The only other time Amakhosi kept a clean sheet without the exact aforementioned four players at the back was in a 1-0 victory over Sekhukhune United, with the only exception being Bradley Cross at left-back.

Nasreddine Nabi's charges also looked solid against Orlando Pirates in the Soweto Derby with Ditlhokwe particularly as a left-back and were only let down by Njabulo Blom, who conceded a last-minute penalty.

The latter was deployed in the right-back position, instead of Frosler.

Nabi has suggested their potential to keep more clean sheets has increased with the new signings of Tashreeq Morris and Makabi Lilepo as they can play more with a rest defence rather than risk playing with overlapping wingbacks.

"For the clean sheet, credit goes to everyone because we feel like everyone did an amazing job, trying to tighten the space, trying to run back when needs be," Nabi told journalists at Athlone Stadium after their win over Stellies.

"It made it easier for the keeper and the defensive line. Getting an early goal helped because usually Reeve is a player that likes to go forward a lot, but we asked him to be more careful in how he moves forward.

"And 'TT', we felt that he can't deal with the pace of (Devin) Titus. We know that TT is a committed defender, he's not someone who is going to overlap and make you five, six crosses during the game.

"With that, now we have players at the top who are quick, who can make the difference in one-v-one," the Tunisian revealed.
