Phala: I was too young to play for Chiefs

Recently retired footballer Thuso Phala admitted that his spell at Kaizer Chiefs came too soon at the age of 19 years old and found his time at the Soweto giants overwhelming.

Phala was a breakout star at then Silver Stars during the 2006/07 season which saw the club finish runners-up in the league and claim the Telkom Knockout.

His exploits on the field alerted Chiefs who wasted no time in snapping up the talented attacker the following season on a five-year deal.

"Dream come true, playing for Chiefs was a childhood dream, but after I signed for Chiefs, I realised I wasn't good enough to play for Chiefs.

"I was too young, it was too overwhelming, the badge," Phala told Marawa Sports Worldwide.

Phala's time with the Glamour Boys ended with 32 appearances for the club in all competitions with just a single goal registered.

"Now, you see a confident guy, but the 19-year-old that signed for Chiefs? It was not matured of confidence," Phala added.

"They are trained for that; I was from Silver Stars and going to Kaizer Chiefs.

"A team with 10 supporters and going to 100 in a week is different, even if you are confident, it is different. I think for me it was too overwhelming.

"(Just) being a Chiefs player it was not easy, like now I was greeted everywhere, the garage, the mall. I was not used to that at Silver Stars. I was in a taxi going to a PSL game, no one knows me.

"I come from the game, I just scored against Chiefs, I'm in the taxi, they don't even recognise me. I go home. But with Chiefs, it's different you can't even get into a taxi."

Over the duration of his decorated career, Phala featured for Platinum Stars, SuperSport United and lastly Black Leopards.
