Key question marks for Chiefs defender

Kaizer Chiefs defender Edmilson Dove's registration procedure has come under question.

Dove remains at Chiefs but hasn't played this season due to injury, plus the issue of his registration.

The 30-year-old was registered as one of five foreign players last season.

While injured during the first half of this campaign, he was de-registered with the club's foreign quota having Inacio Miguel (Angola), Fiacre Ntwari (Rwanda), Thatayaone Ditlhokwe (Botswana), Edson Castillo (Venezuela), and Christian Saile Basomboli (DR Congo).

Saile was then loaned out to SuperSport United in January with his slot then taken by fellow countryman Glody Makabi Lilepo as the PSL rules now allow for clubs to reshuffle mid-season, unlike in the past when the validity of an exhausted foreign quota was all-season.

At the close of the January window, the club had Castillo, Ditlhokwe, Ntwari, Miguel, and Lilepo as their five foreign players.

Ditlhokwe then left for Libya mid-February, leaving Amakhosi with four foreign players.

What remains under question is whether Dove can still be registered on a foreign card and take Ditlhokwe's slot this season.

The NSL handbook on the Status, Registration, and Transfer of Players is rather silent on this matter, only stating that a member club may not have more than five foreign players contracted to it at any point in time.

It is unclear if clubs can have a foreign player slot replacement outside the window like is the case with Chiefs at present.

His eligibility for permanent residence, which will allow for him to be registered as a non-foreigner, is also hanging.

If he had been registered prior to January, it wouldn't have been on a foreign player card as the club had exhausted its quota.

With Ditlhokwe gone and both Bradley Cross and Happy Mashiane not convincing, and Bongani Sam not a preferred choice, it means Dove could be the next solid option until the end of the season if his registration is cleared.
