‘That should have been a penalty' – top ref issues Chiefs/ Milford verdict

Kaizer Chiefs should have been awarded another penalty during their Nedbank Cup last 32 defeat to Milford on Sunday, according to renowned former referee Victor Hlungwani.

The two teams played to a goalless draw, forcing the match into a penalty shootout where Milford would walk away 5-4 winners at FNB Stadium.

The match was marred by controversial decision as Chiefs were awarded a penalty when Unathi Somabhele was adjudged to have handled the ball inside the box. Chiefs Chivaviro went on to miss his penalty.

Reviewing some of the decisions by the match officials on the day, Hlungwani revealed on SABC Sports SoccerZone, that in addition to Chivaviro's penalty, Chiefs should have been awarded a second penalty just five minute later.

Vusumizi Mthabela had challenged Pule Mmodi just inside the box, but the referee pointed to for a free-kick, before showing Mthabela his marching orders for a second yellow.

"There is an infringement that happened, whether it's inside or outside. So we're going to have a look at it and check as to whether it happened inside or outside," Hlungwani explained on SoccerZone.

"There is kicking an opponent there by Vusumuzi, kicking Mmodi, so now was this kick inside or outside let's zoom into it so that we can establish.

"We are happy with the card because that was reckless.

"So, look at that recklessness, is it inside or outside? Let's put some goggles. I see is it inside or outside? You can establish that this happened inside [the box].

"Therefore, a penalty should have been given but the referee there took it outside, which was supposed to be inside and inside is a penalty.

"So that should have been a penalty," the former referee added.

The review will come as little comfort to a Chiefs side now out of the Carling Knockout, out of the MTN8 and out of the Nedbank Cup, with only the DStv Premiership title to play for.
