The genius in Vilakazi's free-kick explained

There was a debate whether Kaizer Chiefs youngster Mfundo Vilakazi scored a great free-kick or goalkeeper Sage Stephens made an error. Ramahlwe Mphahlele has now shared his insight on what led to the goal.

Vilakazi, who was in the line-up for the Carling All Star XI opened the scoring against Stellenbosch in the fourth minute from a free-kick that he curled over the wall and it bounced in front of Stephens, who seemingly reacted late on a wet surface and his hands only helped the ball into the back of the net.

The Amakhosi teenager's goal divided opinion, as some saw it as an error from Stephens while there were a few who saw the genius in the goal.

Ramahlwe Mphahlele, who was in the same team as Vilakazi, has revealed what 'OB' said to him before taking the free-kick.

Mphahlele settled the debate, after revealing that Vilakazi meant to hit the ball in such a way that it bounces, because he was aware that the surface is wet in rainy conditions at Peter Mokaba Stadium.

"Look, when he got the free-kick, because I think it was more on the middle and then I went to him, I'm like, 'You need us to help you in terms of maybe playing and then so we can head'," Mphahlele explained on SABC's Soccer Zone.

"He said, 'No grootmanNgifuna ukuyishaya i bounca (I want to hit it in a way that it bounces), that's what he said to me.

"I'm like, 'Do you need us to go (for a rebound)?'. He said, 'Go in case he saves the ball'. And then I'm sitting there, obviously I'm trying to attack but he did exactly what he said he was gonna do, because he was very aware that the pitch is wet. It was a very difficult ball for Sage (Stephens)," he added.

Vilakazi will be back in action for Chiefs, when the DStv Diski Challenge resumes, on Saturday against Chippa United.
