Why Chiefs turned down 'best striker on the African continent'

After assessing what Kaizer Chiefs needs, the reason why the club rejected a striker offered by agent Mike Makaab could have been revealed.

Chiefs are in the market for a gunslinger after the likes of Jasond Gonzalez, who returned to Colombia, Ranga Chivaviro, Christian Saile and Ashley Du Preez did not live up to expectations last season.

After already confirming the signings of Gaston Sirino, Rushwin Dortley, Inacio Miguel, goalkeeper Fiacre Ntwari and Bongani Sam, the club is still in need of an attacking reinforcement.

They were linked with Togolese forward Yawo Agbagno, who plays for Algerian outfit ASO Chlef.

After prominent agent Makaaab revealed he had offered a striker to Chiefs, there were rumours the mysterious player could be Agbagno, who scored 12 goals from 25 appearances last term.

After the ex-Orlando Pirates coach also officially confirmed that the Soweto giants have rejected his offer for a striker, the reasons could now be revealed.

"The striker I offered Chiefs, in my opinion, is the best striker on the African continent. That's my opinion," Makaab said on Gagasi FM.

"Chiefs have every reason to decline. They don't believe that the striker is the type of striker the coach is looking for. It's one thing to say the striker is a good player, it's another thing [where] that player and the style of play suits what the coach wants to implement at the club, and I absolutely respect that.

"Irrespective of whether the player is a top-class player or not, if the coach doesn't believe that player fits in his philosophy and style of play, he's absolutely correct in saying that he's not interested," he added.

Agbagno appears to be a running striker, who is similar to an attacker like Saile.

Despite the fact the Togolese is 1,85 meters tall, the Glamour Boys appear to be looking for a box striker rather than a running forward.

They had Pyramids striker Fiston Mayele high on their target list, who previously worked with head coach Nasreddine Nabi at Young Africans.

However, a huge transfer fee for a 30-year-old has seen the club backtrack.

Chiefs have reportedly turned their attention to Yanga striker Clement Mzize, whose game is similar to Mayele (a box striker), as he was his understudy at Yanga under Nabi.
