First 90, full marks, pregnant with derby possibilities

Among some of the things that would have pleased Nasreddine Nabi about the emphatic victory over Free Agents FC in the Nedbank Cup is Mfundo Vilakazi completing a full shift for the first time this season.

Though a vital cog in the decently oiled machine that is Kaizer Chiefs, Vilakazi has mostly been used off the bench, where he often comes in to stretch tired defences.

Thus, he has been dubbed a 'super sub', if not a messiah, in some quarters.

Nicknamed 'Obrigado, the 19-year-old is quickly turning into a fan-favourite at the side, a tag he cemented with a late winner against Sekhukhune United two weekends ago.

The youngster enjoyed only his third start in all competitions on Sunday at FNB Stadium, having also been handed a starting berth in a recent 1-0 loss to Golden Arrows and in the 2-2 come-from-behind draw against Magesi FC.

He was pivotal against the third-tier outfit, notably playing a key role in the second goal as he laid the ball off for the on-rushing Wandile Duba, who then dished a low cross for Pule Mmodi to tap into the net for his brace.

Vilakazi has scored two goals and made two assists from his 15 matches in all competitions so far.

Only against Richards Bay FC, as the Soweto giants won 2-1 in November, did he not feature at all.

The most minutes the former DStv Diski Challenge sensation has had on the pitch is 66 in the Magesi stalemate as he came off for Wandile Duba.

The least was 14 minutes in a 4-0 Carling Knockout hammering of SuperSport United after he was introduced in place of Yusuf Maart.

Vilakazi is undeniably one of the aces up Nabi's sleeve for Saturday's Soweto Derby against old foes Orlando Pirates at the Calabash (15:30).
