PSL Keeper: Growing up I played as a striker

A DStv Premiership goalkeeper has revealed he was once a striker before making a name for himself in the professional arena as a shot-stopper.

Mamelodi Sundowns goalkeeper, who spent the last two seasons on loan to SuperSport United, Ricardo Goss recently sat down for an interview with GQ and revealed some truths about himself.

Speaking about his footballing journey, the 30-year-old revealed that he did not always know that he wanted to be place in between the sticks.

"I wouldn't say I knew from the start that I was going to be a goalkeeper. Growing up, I played as a striker," he said.

"I started out as a goalkeeper for Chesterville, where I grew up, teaching a family member how to be a goalkeeper while playing as a striker. I used winter gloves at that time."

The shot-stopper also revealed who his role models were growing up. They make up an exclusive list that consists of an iconic South African keeper and a FIFA World Cup winner.

"Brian 'Spiderman' Baloyi was my inspiration," Goss said.

"I admired his style so much that I wanted to grow dreadlocks like him, but as a person of colour, our hair texture is different.

"When he was captain, he wore bandanas as armbands, which inspired me to do the same.

"Iker Casillas also inspired me with his impressive game reading skills."

Having endured a strenuous 2023/24 campaign in which he made 33 appearances across all competitions and keeping nine clean sheets in the process, the former Bidvest Wits shot-stopper is currently rearing himself for the new season.

While opening up on what he enjoys doing in his down time, The 2023 AFCON bronze medallist explained why he cherishes that break between the seasons.

"I enjoy reading, hiking, and go-karting with my family," he revealed.

"Off-season is precious for me to reconnect because during the season, time with family is limited."
