Mamelodi Sundowns should have been awarded a penalty during their MTN8 Final defeat to Orlando Pirates on Saturday, according to renowned former referee Victor Hlungwani.
The Brazilians were defeated 3-1 in a penalty shootout following a goalless draw after extra time at Moses Mabhida Stadium on Saturday.
Both teams had several appeals for penalties throughout the encounter and although Hlungwani agrees that the match official Abongile Tom was on the mark on most decisions, there was one incident that Hlungwani believes Tom got it wrong.
"We see Peter Shalulile and [Miguel] Timm, let's look at who gets to the ball first," explained Hlungwani on SABC Sport.
"Shalulile gets to the ball first, what does Timm do? Timm trips or kicks him from the back. So here a penalty should have been awarded for kicking and opponent because Shalulile got to the ball first. So here, an incorrect decision by the referee.
"We must protect who gets the ball first because we are playing the ball and not the man. If you play the man, that is a problem."
Mokwena, who felt hard done by the officiating on the evening, told media that he would be paying close attention to the post-match analysis.
"it's on the pitch and I hope it will be on Monday, the discussion. I hope it will be on Monday. I'll be listening and watching," Mokwena said in a post-match press conference.
For Pirates, the MTN8 title means a third consecutive title in a final for Riveiro and the Buccaneers will return to action when they take on Polokwane City on 27 October while Sundowns take on Moroka Swallows on 29 October.
