Adams to Downs, CAFCL eligibility explained

After Mamelodi Sundowns reportedly acquired the signature of Stellenbosch FC midfielder Jayden Adams, this website goes into detail regarding his CAF Champions League eligibility status.

Sundowns already had to deal with signing a cup-tied player from Stellies this season, after Iqraam Rayners could not participate for his new side, in particular against his former team in the two-legged semi-finals of the MTN8.

He had featured for Stellies in their 3-1 quarter-final victory over TS Galaxy just before transferring over.

The Winelands outfit also agreed the sale of Deano Van Rooyen to Orlando Pirates while he was already cup-tied in the MTN8, having played for only five minutes off the bench in that win against Galaxy.

There are question marks on whether Adams would be eligible to feature in the CAF Champions League, should the move become official while Sundowns are still in the tournament, after he also played in the CAF Confederation Cup for Stellies.

KickOff.com understands the midfielder will not be able to play in the Champions League this season, as he would be cup-tied, as per CAF's regulations, which classify the that competition and the CAF Confederation Cup as one.

"During the same year a player is in principle only eligible to play for one and the same club in the CAF inter-club competitions," CAF regulations on Registration and Qualification of players reads.

Adams was only going to be eligible to play for The Brazilians if he had not played any minute for Stellies in the Confed Cup, but he has already played nine matches for Steve Barker's charges in the tournament.

"However, a player - even though registered on the list of a club - who has not been fielded in any match of inter-clubs competitions will be authorised to play for another participating club in the inter-clubs competitions during the same year so long as all the regulations are complied with," the CAF regulations states.

"A player fielded is a player who was among the 11 who started the match or a player who replaced one of the 11 players who started the match. A substitute player on the list who did not participate as mentioned above is not considered fielded," the CAF regulations read.
