Advantage for Downs in September

Mamelodi Sundowns have been handed a fixture advantage in the CAF Champions League, which will now have them playing all their fixtures for the month of September in Gauteng.

After consecutive defeats to Stellenbosch FC, which denied them a place in the MTN8 final, Sundowns will switch focus to the Champions League for their next match.

This will be in the second qualifying round of the premier club competition on the continent after receiving a bye in the first round due to their higher ranking.

Eswatini champions Mbabane Swallows will be the opposition.

Instead of traveling 360km to Mbabane for the first leg on September 14, The Brazilians will be the away team at Lucas Moripe Stadium.

Swallows have been forced to play their home games at the Tshwane venue because Eswatini has no CAF-approved stadiums.

They played the home leg of their match against Ferroviario de Beira at the same stadium located in Atteridgeville, which they have now confirmed will remain their adopted home again in this round.

Lucas Moripe Stadium is one of two home grounds for Sundowns along with Loftus Versfeld.

This will be the first ever meeting between Sundowns and Swallows.

After the first leg against Swallows, the champions will then host SuperSport United in the Betway Premiership on September 17, before they play the home leg against Swallows the following weekend.

After that, they will host Marumo Gallants on September 24 and then take the short trip to FNB Stadium four days later for a date with Kaizer Chiefs.

This means the next five games will all be in Gauteng for Sundowns, who could still play another one in the province depending on the draw of the Carling Knockout Last 16.
