Downs legend: Rulani and players should be blamed

Former Mamelodi Sundowns striker Sandile 'AK-47' Ndlovu believes the club's head coach Rulani Mokwena and his players should take the blame for the dropped points in their recent CAF Champions League matches.

Ndlovu feels the approach in the group stages was not the right one as the Group A leaders struggled to convert chances at Loftus Versfeld Stadium.

On Sunday the South African champions had to settle for a point against Egyptian club Pyramids FC.

"I think Sundowns are too relaxed," Ndlovu tells KickOff.

"Once you relax you are bound to lose focus. They think of themselves as the giants of African football as a whole. But they will wake up and smell the coffee pretty soon. The coach and the players no longer have the determination to progress further," he added.

"There is still that excitement of winning the African Football League, hence Rulani Mokwena has been changing his team quite a lot recently. Every competition you play in should be treated with the respect it deserves, you must try to win every competition on offer.

"I'm happy because coach Manqoba Mngqithi is there and he is very experienced. He knows how to deal with such situations. So he will guide Rulani because he is still young. They must emphasize to the boys that the AFL honeymoon is now over we must chase our other goals.

"At Sundowns, there was this legend Isaac Shai who used to tell me the net never gets full. Even during my time at Dynamos, those words would still ring in my ears. Always focus on your next mission," the legend explained.

"At the moment every team in Group A is sitting on four points. So any wrong move, Sundowns will be knocked out of the Champions League. The coach should always remind his players that they need more money and accolades.

"Sundowns are relaxed because that motivation is no longer there. They forget that in football, there is no such thing as obvious. I feel the Sundowns coach and his players should be blamed for the dropped points. They could have easily gotten maximum points," he added.
