Onana CAF selection over Williams found 'puzzling'

Bafana Bafana goalkeeper coach Grant Johnson is thrilled with Ronwen Williams's recent accomplishments at the 2024 CAF Awards held in the city of Marrakech, Morocco on Monday.

Johnson and Williams also worked together at SuperSport United, where the former is still working as a goalkeeper coach.

In addition to winning the CAF Goalkeeper of the Year Award earlier this week, the Mamelodi Sundowns star was also named the CAF Interclub Player of the Year.

"I'm ecstatic about Ronwen's awards. It's incredible what he has achieved this year," Johnson reveals in an interview with KickOff.com.

"He has received multiple titles and is recognised as the Ballon d'Or's number nine goalkeeper in the world.

"He's Africa's number one. At AFCON, he won the Goalkeeper of the Tournament.

"It has truly been an amazing year for him, and I'm glad to be a part of his journey," he says.

Johnson, a goalkeeper for the likes of Manning Rangers and Orlando Pirates in his heyday, goes on to share a disappointment from the Gqeberha-born player's big night.

"My only disappointment is that while he earned these significant awards, he was not included in the CAF Team of the Year.

"[Andre] Onana was selected as the team's goalkeeper, which I find puzzling, especially since Onana hasn't had the best season.

"Perhaps it's because he plays for a prominent club in Europe... I don't know.

"Even at AFCON, he hasn't played many matches at the international level, so I was quite surprised to see him chosen over Ronwen."

Williams will hope to be back in the line-up when Sundowns take on AmaZulu at Moses Mabhida on Christmas Eve, after he could not make the trip to Cape Town to face Stellenbosch FC on Wednesday due to his travels.
