Downs sitting on cautions time bomb

Mamelodi Sundowns' worries over the rate at which they are being showered with yellow and red cards are sitting at the club's front door.

Seven Sundowns players - two of them twice - have already been sent off this season in what is turning to be a regular occurrence.

Denis Onyango is currently serving suspension after he was sent off for the second time this season last Wednesday night in the 3-1 win over Marumo Gallants.

Tashreeq Matthews, Bathusi Aubaas (twice), Divine Lunga, Ronwen Williams, Khuliso Mudau, and Aubrey Modiba have also all been sent for an early shower.

At present, the clean list has Malibongwe Khoza, Grant Kekana, Jody February, Keanu Cupido, Lucas Suarez, Terrence Mashego, Neo Maema, Matias Esquivel, Lucas Ribeiro Costa, Thapelo Maseko, Siyabonga Mabena, Rivaldo Coetzee, and Themba Zwane.

These are players without even one caution to their names as it stands.

However, it is worth noting that Ribeiro Costa has 10 yellow cards, while Khoza and Kekana have had cautions along the way.

Ahead of the midweek game against Sekhukhune United, Sundowns have Marcelo Allende, Sphelele Mkhulise, Asekho Tiwani, Aubrey Modiba, Bathusi Aubaas, Kegan Johannes, and Mothobi Mvala on three yellow cards.

Divine Lunga and Mosa Lebusa have two each, while Arthur Sales, Iqraam Rayners, Jayden Adams, Kobamelo Kodisang, Kutlwano Letlhaku, Peter Shalulile, Teboho Mokoena, Thapelo Morena, and Zuko Mdunyelwa are sitting on one each.

The technical team has not been spared with Miguel Cardoso and Steve Komphela on one each, while Fabio Fernandes has two.

Though each caution is based on its own circumstances – at times questionable – it does raise elements of discipline in the way Sundowns are going about their business.
