Downs players in the cold under Cardoso

With new Mamelodi Sundowns head coach Miguel Cardoso open to rotation, there are still more players who may be out of favour.

The arrival of Cardoso has revived the careers of some players who had fallen down the pecking order, as is the case with a new coach at every club.

Players such as Kobamelo Kodisang, Rushine De Reuck, Neo Maema, Sphelele Mkhulise, and Divine Lunga are the beneficiaries of receiving favour from the Portuguese tactician in his first two games.

However, question marks remain on some of the players yet to get minutes.

Apart from those  injured, Thembinkosi Lorch was tipped to finally feature after he was in the periphery under Manqoba Mngqithi.

However, he has recovered from injury, but he is yet to make the matchday squad under Cardoso.

The other player who has dramatically dropped in the pecking order is left-back Asekho Tiwani, who was a first choice in his position under Mngqithi and is also yet to make the matchday squad.

The 52-year-old coach clearly prefers Lunga, and against Stellenbosch FC, even switched Thapelo Morena to left-back in the dying minutes, as he overloaded the left flank with Aubrey Modiba as a cushion.

The other left-back, Terrence Mashego, got 10 minutes off the bench against Raja Casablanca and was an unused substitute against Stellies.

After recovering from injury, Kegan Johannes may need to bide his time, as Malibongwe Khoza has seemingly made an impression on the Portuguese after starting and finishing both matches.

With De Reuck also given a nod against Stellies, the centre-back positions have become hotly contested, with Mothobi Mvala and Grant Kekana currently injured.

The likes of Lesiba Nku and Zuko Mdunyelwa will also be looking to impress at training.

Other players currently injured, as per the latest communique from Chloorkop, are Tashreeq Matthews, Themba Zwane, Siyabonga Mabena, and Rivaldo Coetzee.
