'I don't believe they're as strong as they once were'

A legendary Mamelodi Sundowns figure believes the side has a better squad than they did last year when they got knocked out of the CAF Champions League by Esperance.

During a draw held in Qatar on Thursday, Sundowns were pitted against Tunisian giants Esperance, whom they met in the semi-finals of the competition last time out.

They bowed out with a 2-0 aggregate score after losing both legs 1-0.

Roger Feutmba has, however, expressed confidence in the Tshwane giants exacting revenge when the two teams square off in April in the two-legged quarterfinals.

"The Esperance of Tunis has always been a team that reaches the finals or semi-finals, so they have a lot of experience," offers Feutmba, speaking to KickOff.com.

"However, Sundowns have also been competing at this level for many years now. Most of Sundowns' players are accustomed to this level of competition and know what to expect.

"I believe they have learned from their past mistakes, and this time they will approach the game differently. Sundowns now boast a stronger roster with higher-quality players.

"Often, it's the team that dominates the match that ends up losing. The only thing that could lead to our downfall is overconfidence. While it's important to be confident, we must also respect our opponents," he goes on.

'The General' says at this level, any mistake can be costly, even when a team is in control of a match.

"I truly believe that we have a team that can go all the way and win in Africa. I'm pleased that two South African teams avoided each other in the draw. This gives our country a better chance to reach the finals, and hopefully the cup will return to South Africa.

"It's a tough match-up against Esperance, but I don't believe they are as strong as they once were. Respecting our opponents is crucial. Having a great team alone is not enough, we need to focus at all times.

"Honestly, Sundowns have the quality to go far in this competition and even win the trophy. It won't be an easy game, but I am confident in Sundowns' capabilities.

"In football, it's essential to take every game seriously and to avoid conceding unnecessary goals. We have a quality team that can beat any opponent in these tournaments," says the man considered arguably the best foreigner to have played in the PSL.

Al Ahly or Al Hilal awaits in the semi-finals for the winner of this clash.

"I would prefer Al Ahly over Al Hilal; we usually achieve good results against Al Ahly. We just need to ensure we play well. We must learn to dominate our games."
