Flemming hot saga: Rulani 'feels undermined, to an extent'

Following reports that Mamelodi Sundowns head coach Rulani Mokwena is on the verge of leaving the club, KickOff has the latest on the matter.

Reports are already rife that Mokwena has parted ways with Sundowns, with expectations that club is due to make an announcement.

The 37-year-old coach is said to be at loggerheads with Sporting Director Flemming Berg, with their relationship reportedly strained by transfer-related and performance issues.

Mokwena is on record saying he feels 'deeply disappointed' by their season despite winning two trophies and believes The Brazilians could have done better.

Indications were that a review by the Sundowns hierarchy came out with the conclusion that the former Orlando Pirates interim coach has not met certain objectives that were set by the club, hence the current impasse on whether he should continue as head coach.

However, word reaching this website, from a reliable source close to Masandawana, is that the tactician has not been pushed out of the club by either Berg or the hierarchy but he is the one who is threatening to leave.

"In his dispute with Berg, Rulani is the one threatening to abandon his role as a head coach, he is the one offering to leave the club," the source claims.

"The issue goes back to last season, where certain players left the club against Rulani's wishes and the same issue has continued, where Rulani feels his recommendations, especially on transfer matters, are not followed.

"Actually, he feels undermined, to an extent.

"He feels that he is being set up for failure if he is to be held accountable for the results of the team while he cannot control the players who are staying and who should be signed. The matter now has spilled into technical matters, where now he feels it is bordering on interference," added the source.

This publication has been led to believe that Sundowns and Mokwena's camp are locked in negotiations over the settlement of the Soweto-born mentor, who had signed a four-year contract in June last year.
