'Sundowns have the quality none of these three teams have'

Mamelodi Sundowns may have been drawn in what many view as the Group of Death in the CAF Champions League on Monday, but the club's former assistant coach Farouk Khan has backed Ronwen Williams to lead them to glory.

The draw for the group stage was held at CAF's headquarters in Cairo, Egypt.

Sundowns have been pitted against the Morrocan duo of Raja Casablanca and AS FAR, as well as AS Maniema Union from the Democratic Republic of Congo.

The latter they did meet in the second preliminary round of the 2021/22 edition, winning 4-2 on aggregate after battling to a 2-all draw in the first leg, before finishing the job in Tshwane with a 2-0 scoreline in the return leg.

Raja, who were a notable absentee from the competition last year, will provide a stiff challenge, as will AS FAR, who were under the guidance of Nasreddine Nabi last season.

"Without a doubt, Sundowns have the quality none of these three teams have," Khan tells KickOff.

"Pound for pound, Sundowns have a very formidable team, though the start they've had has been up and down. They haven't been convincing. But I think with the players they have, they shouldn't have a problem going all the way and winning this one this time around.

"They always have quality and depth. I mean, they have prepared this team for how long now since they won the Champions League? The last time they won it, it was with Pitso Mosimane. Over the years, they've had enough time to strengthen the team.

"They've got the best goalkeeper in Africa in Ronwen Williams, and some of the best players, [Teboho] Mokoena, [Khuliso] Mudau, [Lucas] Ribeiro [Costa] ... you can't ask for more.

"I don't think any team can give Sundowns a problem on their day. They've proven that when everybody thought Al Ahly was at their best, Sundowns gave them 5-0. And nobody expected that," he continues.

The Stars of Africa Academy boss says the Chloorkop-based side are always the team to beat in the Champions League, adding that the quality they have stands them in good stead.

"They have all the quality, and in any cup game the goalkeeper is the most important player. Sundowns is a very good team. Nobody can win seven league titles in a row if they were not good.

"They have all the quality, they have all the resources, Patrice Motsepe is giving them all the backing. He is a very important person in African football. As the president of CAF, of course, he will want his team to do well.

"If Sundowns want a player, Patrice doesn't refuse, he gets them the player. So, I do think they have what it takes to go all the way."

The Brazilians are home to AS Maniema for their group opener on the weekend of 26-27 November.
