‘The money that Sundowns paid for him is a bargain’

The transfer fee that Mamelodi Sundowns reportedly paid for Arthur de Oliviera Sales has been described as having been a bargain.

Sales has joined Sundowns to widen the options up front, where Peter Shalulile has carried the load.

His transfer has been reported to have been in the region of R60 million, arriving from Belgian Second Division club Lommel SK.

The 22-year-old has also played in Portugal and the top two-tier leagues of Brazil.

"This is a player that came through Vasco da Gama's ranks and has played in the Serie A here in Brazil, so that should already inform you that his quality is top," says retired Brazilian winger Freitas Camilo, who had a stint with Orlando Pirates in 1988.

"Sundowns deserve all due respect for being able to identify these kinds of Brazilian players and getting them in without paying exorbitant transfer fees.

"The money that Sundowns paid for him is a bargain considering his profile and the fact that he is only 22.

"Any player who has been in the Brazilian top league comes at a cost that will be in the region of USD7 million (approx. USD128 million), especially at that age.

"Sundowns have now got a player who has played in Brazil and then Belgium and Portugal, let's just hope he adjusts fast to South Africa.

"Considering the price of Brazilian players, this is a great buy for Sundowns and credit to their recruitment network.

"It doesn't matter how long he played here in the Serie A and B, but the fact is that he made it through and then left for Europe like most Brazilians.

"The Portuguese and Belgian leagues provide a place to acclimatize for Brazilian players and if they don't make into the bigger leagues, they take up other options.

"Football is business and once the better offer comes from elsewhere away from Europe, you then move, so I don't blame the player.

"There are Brazilian players all over the world chasing better contracts.

"This guy could have one good season at Sundowns, then do a great job at the Club World Cup next year and next thing he leaves for triple the money he was bought for," says Camilo.
