My Welcome To The League Moment: Leonard Xaba

In our exciting feature My Welcome To The League Moment, KickOff speaks to former Mamelodi Sundowns and Wits University FC defender Leonard Xaba.

The retired centr3-back says the biggest test in the Premier Soccer League came against Kaizer Chiefs.

"It was during a Coca-Cola Cup match at FNB Stadium against Kaizer Chiefs, it was hectic, I was still playing for Wits University at the time," Xaba tells KickOff.

"We played a draw on a Saturday and the rain came down very hard, and I was on the bench.

"And when the game was replayed during the week I was on the starting line-up after Benson Mhlongo got a red card. He was suspended.

"I had a nightmare of a game in that midweek encounter, I don't know what was happening to me," he added.

"Kaizer Chiefs were on fire that day, upfront they had Spoko (Sibusiso Dlamini), Collins Mbesuma and Arthur Zwane, Scara Ngobese on the wing.

"I only lasted 45 minutes in that match, I was substituted in the second half.

"It's not like any of the Chiefs players was giving me a tough time or something, I just had a bad start in that game and I couldn't bounce back.

"At half-time, our assistant coach Wellington Manyathi came straight at me and said, hey boy today you are not the Leonard Xaba I know.

"I was always second on the ball, with all the height I have, still I couldn't win any high balls.

"I had a bad day at the office that night. It was nerve-wracking, every time the former Kaizer Chiefs PRO Putco Mafani shouted 'blow your vuvuzela' the FNB crowd would go wild," he added.
