Cardoso wanted more goals from Sundowns

Mamelodi Sundowns coach Miguel Cardoso wanted more goals from his side against Mpheni Home Defenders in the Nedbank Cup on Sunday.

First-half goals from Tashreeq Matthews and Bathusi Aubaas guided Masandawana to victory, with the former given his marching orders early in the second period for a lunging challenge.

"(Laughs), that's a very interesting question and its interesting why because obviously after you score the second goal, the expectations is that you going to finish with a high score and that's what I told the lads at halftime," Cardoso told SuperSport TV.

"We were supposed to take responsibility of scoring more goals, it was obvious that we could've even done it in the first half.

"Anyway, we get to the second half and the fact that Tashreeq makes a mistake and gets expelled, our blushes was just to manage the game and that's what we did.

"I tried as much as possible so to hold the players outside that were more sharp that we didn't need to put them and put more time on the legs and finish the game, that was the objective.

"Obviously, the strengths and direct were there because we should've won by more numbers (goals) but in the end we did the job."

In an attempt for more goals, Cardoso turned to the bench late in the second half and rued the fact that they didn't exploit the spaces the visitors left behind.

"We made the change in order to try and score the third goal one hundred percent. I think it missed a little bit of clearness not creativity to be more aware and use the spaces because there were so many spaces," Cardoso said.

"That's why I told the players that were entering that please just understand there's more spaces because they are pressing us like crazy here and they are leaving spaces everywhere. So, you cannot cover everything with a blanket.

"So, we just didn't use it properly, so it was important for us to finish the game and not concede one goal because if you suffer one goal in this game it will get emotionally very difficult to cope.

"So, I didn't want to leave that moment and expose the team to that moment so we closed the game and it's finished."
