Mngqithi issues injury update on key Downs player

Mamelodi Sundowns head coach Manqoba Mngqithi has provided an update on the recovery on defender Mothobi Mvala who missed out on Bafana's AFCON Qualifier against South Sudan due to injury.

The Brazilians are gearing up for the Carling Knockout Final against Magesi to be played at the Toyota Stadium in Free State on Saturday.

Ahead of the match, Mngqithi was expected to make some crucial changes to his squad, with the likes of Mvala understood to have sustained an injury on national team duty.

The 29-year-old centre-back had played the full 90 minutes during Bafana's 2-0 win over Uganda on Friday, but was not part of the matchday squad for the match against South Sudan due to an injury on his hand.

However, Mvala could well be back in contention to feature come Saturday, with Mngqithi revealing that the injury is not as bad as previously understood.

"We did get feedback on Mothobi - It's just an injury on his hand, and it's not something that can take him out from playing in the final," the 53-year-old told journalists at the club's media open day ahead of the Final.

Meanwhile, Sundowns will still be without talisman Themba Zwane who is recovering after undergoing surgery for an Achilles injury.

Standing in the path of Mngqithi as his first trophy as Sundowns head coach will be an ambitious Magesi outfit already with a taste for humbling the so called bigger teams.

In their journey to the final, Dikwena tša Meetse knocked out favourites Orlando Pirates in the last 16, TS Galaxy in the last eight and Richards Bay in the semi-final.

They held both SuperSport United and Kaizer Chiefs to a draw in the league and will fancy their chances against a Sundowns side currently trailing behind Pirates in the league.

The cup final is scheduled to kick off at 18:00.
