Mngqithi issues response to unhappy Downs supporters

The man who has had a tempestuous start to his new job, Manqoba Mngqithi, has issued a response to sections of unhappy Mamelodi Sundowns supporters following the team's poor start to the season.

Sundowns crashed out of the MTN8 after losing both legs 1-0 to Stellenbosch FC in the semi-finals.

The results have piled pressure and scrutiny on new head coach Mngqithi – who took over the reins from Rulani Mokwena ahead of the new season.

By Downs' high standards, a start of two defeats and a single win from three opening matches is a poor return, with sections of the fan base voicing out their displeasure via various social media platforms.

Mngqithi has maintained that he is not pressing the panic button just yet.

Speaking to journalists at the Betway Premiership launch, the former Golden Arrows mentor said he would be surprised If any supporters felt he is not up to the task.

"I don't even have social media, so I can't answer on something that I don't even see," Mngqithi said when asked about what he's made of the recent comments by some supporters.

"One thing I know is that when you are the leader of a pack, it's always important to try to move your ears away from the crowd and focus on what you are doing because as it is, I don't think there is any reason for anyone to believe that I cannot coach Sundowns.

"I believe anyone who feels like [that] maybe might be malicious, maybe might be having issues, or maybe might be sent by others to say things that suit those particular individuals," he added.

"But for someone to think I'm incapable of coaching Sundowns, it will be very strange for me."
