My Locker Room Secrets: Charles Motlohi

In the latest edition of My Locker Room Secrets, KickOff catches up with former Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder Charles Motlohi.

The Free-State-based former footballer leaves nothing out in this tell-all interview as he reveals how his teammates behaved behind the scenes.

Who was always late?

"Lovers Mohlala always had excuses about his many girlfriends, and Sipho Nunes, hhai, ubebushaya la mfana [he drank like a fish]. Sometimes he'd be chased away from the gym and told to go home. He used to drink every evening."

Any interesting rituals before they played?

"Roger Feutmba. He always wanted to be the last one to enter the field."

Who was the jokester?

"Lovers Mohlala, Eric Ramasike, the late Joas Magolego, and Joel Masilela, those are the people who enjoyed making fun of other people."

Was it a muti changeroom?

"The Sundowns dressing room was full of ZCC members. We had the likes of Isaac Shai and Bennet Mnguni.

"The only place that I will never forget when it comes to muti is at AmaZulu. Iyaa umuthi bewusentshenziswa ke lapho.

"The four months that I spent there felt like years, and the funny thing is you do all these muti things but the club continues to lose match after match."

"Who was the singer?

"I was the one who started all songs in our dressing room, but I'd only do it if I was in the starting line-up, otherwise I'd tell them, hey I'm not here to sing but to play football."

Who was the best dressed and worst dressed?

"The best dressed were Roger Feutmba, Raphael Chukwu, and John Tlale.

"As for the rest, they were not that good when it came to dressing properly. Alain Amogou is the first culprit.

"The likes of Isaac Shai and Eric Ramasike were always on their football stuff."

Who never showered?

"Alain Amogou. He preferred doing it at his place. He never liked the idea of being naked in front of other men."

Rate the coach's team talk

"Ted Dumitru. He never changed your style of play, he wanted a player to use his God-given talent.

"He'd say to a player, play the same way you did at your former club, that's what made me sign you anyway.

"Dumitru allowed his defensive players to go up and assist in finding a goal, not like Paul Dolezar who screamed at you every time you tried that and wasted an opportunity."
