In this edition of My Muti Story, we hear from former Mamelodi Sundowns player Sibongakonke Ndlovu.
Who and where?
"Ngizoshaywa nge Zulu la [laughs], but there was this one club I played for, before every game they made sure they washed our jersey in muti, and incense would be burned [laughs].
"But most times muti would be used when we played big clubs like Kaizer Chiefs and Pirates.
"I remember we once played in a wet kit against Pirates. It was smelly yoh!"
Why were you doing it?
"For positive results and to make the opposition chase our shadows."
Who was the muti man?
"Most times it's the team managers and kit managers who play that role."
What did you have to do?
"We just had to follow everything they told us."
Did everyone take part?
"Yes, everyone. Yes, some were claiming to be born-again Christians, but they had no choice because of the majority rule.
"The foreigners, especially the ones from Africa would first resist saying, 'No man I'm a Christian I'm born again' but end up joining everyone as time goes on."
What stood out?
"Every time we lost the muti man would say 'There's someone who didn't follow my rules, someone slept with a woman here," What stood out for me was our game against Pirates."
What was the result?
"I remember that day very well, we beat Pirates 3-1. We were cruising that day."
