New Downs coach handed 'very clear' mandate

Sporting director Flemming Berg has revealed a 'clear' mandate for Mamelodi Sundowns' new head coach Miguel Cardoso.

Sundowns announced via press briefing on Tuesday the arrival of new head coach Miguel Cardoso who comes in as a replacement for Manqoba Mngqithi.

According to club bossThlopie Motsepe , the decision was made on the back of what the club's hierarchy had deemed unsatisfactory recent results or 'not heading in the right direction' under the former Lamontville Golden Arrows coach.

Sundowns failed to win the MTN8 and Carling Knockout, while they could not win either of their two opening group stage matches in the CAF Champions League.

Speaking at the conference, Berg revealed that the mandate for the new coach is simply to win every competition that the club partakes in.

To Mngqithi's credit, the Betway Premiership is where Sundowns have maintained their dominance, sitting at the summit of the log table with seven wins from eight matches.

"The mandate for any head coach of Sundowns is very clear, it is to win every competition we participate in," Berg said.

"If that's the possibility for the [FIFA] Club World Cup, I will let other people make that valuation. But in general, that's the mandate for all head coaches at the club, and for coach Miguel."

"I will say when it comes to the past, I worked very, very clearly on a specific model that I call a DPS model," he said.

"I don't know if you have heard about it, but a DPS strength is not about where it has been and as a leader, you always have to know exactly where you are at a particular moment and you will know where you are going and how you are going to get there.

"That has been the decision made by the board and the family. Of course, we are all in support of that and are sure that we have taken the right steps to take Mamelodi Sundowns to even higher levels."

Cardoso oversaw his first training session on Wednesday, and should his documentation be up to date, could be in the dugout when The Brazilians take on Raja Club Athletic on Sunday at Loftus Versfeld.
