Why Mendieta left Sundowns

A year ago, Junior Mendieta was handed the biggest contract of his career when he moved from Stellenbosch to Mamelodi Sundowns.

Mendieta had just turned 30 and had been at Stellenbosch for three years growing to establish himself as the attacking pivot.

The Argentine's third season in the Cape Winelands was amazing as he finished with 19 goal contributions (10 goals and nine assists) in 31 appearances.

He started every match that he played through that season just like he had been in the starting XI for all but two in the previous campaign when he played 26 games.

However, upon arrival at Sundowns where his package went up by more than double and had fellow South Americans, starting games became an issue that diluted his influence as he ended with two goals and three assists.

By the time he came on for his 21st substitute appearance in the Nedbank Cup final, Mendieta had long established how much it will take for him to leave.

Eight starts from the 29 matches that he played which added up to his least number of minutes played in a season from his time in South Africa mattered more than the money he was earning.

When Volos NPS tabled an offer that satisfied Sundowns' expectations, Mendieta was already aware what he will earn in the Greek coastal city.

He had been amongst the lowest paid of the South Americans at Sundowns.

The slight improvement on his package in moving to Greece came with the promise from the club's coaches that he will be starting matches in a team pregnant with other Argentines.

The Greek Super League club already has three Argentines in Juan Manuel Garcia, Maximiliano Gabriel Comba, and Facundo Daniel Bertoglio who were signed at the beginning of last season and have since added Lucas Martin Villafanez.

Mendieta will also enjoy familiar language benefits from the technical team who are from Spain.

In playing in Europe, he will then position himself favourable for a move to the Gulf Region afterwards where he can play, regardless of age.
