Zungu's unfamiliar role explained

Rulani Mokwena has revealed the reason behind the decision to play Bongani Zungu in an unfamiliar role during Mamelodi Sundowns' Nedbank Cup victory over La Masia.

Sundowns sealed a spot in the last 16 of the Nedbank Cup with a massive 6-1 hammering of Motsepe Foundation Championship outfit La Masia at Dobsonville Stadium on Tuesday night.

Goals came from new signing Matias Esquivel, Terrence Mashego, Lebohang Maboe and a Gaston Sirino hattrick.

With Bafana stars Grant Kekana and Mothobi Mvala out of action, Sundowns initially saw Sipho Mbule play centre-back in a back three, a role that would be taken up by at half-time.

Speaking to media after the match, Mokwena explained why he felt confident that the former Amiens SC star would bring the necessary experience required in the unfamiliar role.

"No but Bongs (Bongani Zungu) has got seniority, he's got experience, he is matured," Mokwena said.

"His time in Europe has really really helped him to become a top football player at a very good level. He organises the team on the pitch and these are some of the things that you don't really see.

"He is selfless. He's a good human being. Bongs looks after the younger ones, he looks after the team. He gives leadership and coaches the players on the side sometimes even after training.

"I saw even his leadership during some of the set-pieces where he was organising the team. So I'm very proud of him. Proud of the entire team. All the substitutes. They did well.
