Rulani's agent responds to Marseille links

The agent of Mamelodi Sundowns head coach Rulani Mokwena has responded to reports that French giants Olympique de Marseille have been petitioned to enlist the services of his client in search of a new coach.

Marseille are in search of a new manager to take over ahead of next season after appointing Frenchman Jean-Louis Gasset in February on a caretaker basis until the end of the campaign.

Gasset, who was in charge of Ivory Coast at the AFCON, before he was relieved of his duties after losing the first two games, succeeded Gennaro Gattuso, who parted ways with Marseille following a string of poor results.

A section of OM's supporters reportedly signed a petition for the club to hire Mokwena in preparation for 2024/25, as per the news that were making headlines on SABC Sport's Soccer Zone.

The 37-year-old's representative, Steve Kapeluschnik, has admitted, speaking exclusively to KickOff.com, that there has always been interest in Mokwena; however, they are not in a position to engage in talks with other clubs at this crucial stage of the season.

"Look, there's been a lot of interest in Rulani. He's done phenomenally well, but you know he's focused on where he is at the moment and you know certainly we're not gonna be talking to clubs about Rulani when he's trying to win the Champions League or trying to win the league or is in a cup final," Kapeluschnik reasoned.

"So, there's been no discussions on my part. But obviously, we always get enquiries about Rulani, that's just the way it has been."

Gasset, 70, announced his retirement from active management ahead of Marseille's last game of the season against Le Havre, which they won 2-1 last Sunday.

"Sunday will be the last match of my career," Gasset had said at a press conference, as per reuters.com.

"That I stay in football, that my experience, my ideas and my networks are used is a possibility. I don't know how to garden, I won't have anything to do. But as a coach, it's over."
