‘Shalulile is taking it personal’

Mamelodi Sundowns gunman Peter Shalulile has been told about the need to loosen up to regain his scoring confidence back.

Shalulile has now played 10 games without a goal with his last strike having come against TP Mazembe on March 2.

Since that goal, the Namibian has played 570 minutes without a goal in games against Young Africans (two), Esperance (two), Chippa United, SuperSport United, Cape Town Spurs, Moroka Swallows, Maritzburg United and University of Pretoria.

He wasn't involved in the games against Richards Bay FC and Sekhukhune United as he was rested.

"What is happening with Shalulile is concerning but nothing new," says Ishmael Maluleke, the 2001/02 PSL top scorer, whose 18 goals at Manning Rangers then won him a move to Sundowns.

The 30-year-old has 112 goals playing for a South African top league club, leaving him in need of just a dozen to surpass Siyabonga Nomvete's haul of 123.

"It is unfortunate that Shalulile is taking all this personal because he wants to be top scorer and break records.

"I don't think he has found the proper people to assist him in terms of regaining his scoring boots.

"If I were to advise him having been in a similar situation before to what he is going through now, it would be that he shouldn't want to carry the team on his shoulders.

"He must remember the good days when he was scoring and celebrating.

"Those positives will remind him that he hasn't become a bad player because he hasn't scored in 10 games now.

"He shouldn't try too hard and be always thinking about making sure that he scores.

"He is human after all and not a machine, so it will happen that he will miss.

"What is vital is that he stays away from social media and all these things that will disrupt his mind because everyone's opinion can be heard on social media.

"The challenge with listening to social media voices is that you never know their intentions, some just want to test your mental strength.

"It is better to think about helping the team win games without putting pressure on himself about scoring goals.

"Once the team is winning, then he will regain his confidence and goals will come.

"He needs to relax and focus on getting into scoring positions.

"But what I have noticed is that he is trying too hard to get back into scoring rhythm.

"Scoring goals is a mental thing and right now his mind is not in a good space.

"It is important to give himself time for shooting practice alone just to enjoy getting the ball into the nets again.

"The other issue is that he is thinking about being top scorer every season.

"It cannot happen that way all the time.

"He must stop thinking that for him to be recognised, then he must be the top scorer every season.

"He is playing in a team against opposition that plan for him, so he needs to understand that at times they will have planned better for him.

"Defenders and goalkeepers are also there to make sure you don't score, so they also deserve credit," says Maluleke.
