Sundowns address Cardoso's underwhelming CV

Mamelodi Sundowns have come to the defence of new head coach Miguel Cardoso, who does not boast as decorated a CV as the names of the clubs he has previously worked at would suggest.

With the high standards set at Sundowns, a foreign coach coming in is expected to be a proven winner.

Cardoso arrives with only one Tunisian league title and league and cup double with Shakhtar Donetsk, achieved in the 2016/17 season, as his major honours.

However, club chairman Tlhopie Motsepe believes the Portuguese's track record speaks volumes and that perhaps he worked more at clubs that were not as heavily resourced as his new employers.

"Coach Miguel's CV is one that I think it's better spoken than read. If you had a chance to speak to the coach about his experiences in Rio Ave, in France, when he was at Shakhtar Donetsk, you understand how much he learned and developed, the challenges and improvements he made to those teams," Motsepe told the media at the press conference announcing the new coach at Chloorkop.

"And with all due respect to all the teams he coached, he didn't necessarily have all the tools he would have hoped to have. We see ourselves as an opportunity of a club he can achieve greater success with.

"The one title, nobody wants to speak about other coaches, but when Jurgen Klopp arrived at Liverpool, he didn't have the most decorated CV, but now he leaves the club as a legend. All masters and legends start somewhere. We hope this is a club where he starts to write his legend," Motsepe added.

The 52-year-old coach also made his own case that people should not judge him only on how many trophies he has won.

"It's really interesting this discussion, because we live in a society and a sport where people judge the CVs by the trophies. But sometimes they forget, in order to win, not only [do] you need to be in a context where you can truly fight to win but also sometimes you're in a context where winning is not about getting trophies," Cardoso said at his unveiling.

"For example, I have four finals of big competitions, we won zero. I'm speaking about youth league with Shakhtar Donetsk, Europa League with Braga, final of the [CAF] Champions League with Esperance. My God, being on those finals is so big trophy, that when you look at my CV, don't judge because we lost that game," he pleaded.
