Sundowns boss explains Mngqithi sacking

Mamelodi Sundowns chairman Tlhopie Motsepe has attributed many compounding factors to the departure of Manqoba Mngqithi from Chloorkop.

Mngqithi has been shown the back door at Sundowns after only less than six months as head coach at the club. The Kwa-Zulu Natal-born coach has since been replaced by Portuguese coach Miguel Cardoso,

Wendell Robinson and Romain Folz have also parted company with the club, while Steve Komphela and Kennedy Mweene remain part of the technical team under Cardoso.

Masandawana missed a chance to win both the MTN 8 and the Carling Knockout Cup under Manqoba Mngqithi.

They have also only collected two points from their two games so far in the CAF Champions League.

"It wasn't Magesi game that made the decider. The Magesi game was magic for most and tragic for us. It was definitely something you look back on for the football.

"Somebody came up to me at the end of the game and said this is why football is called a beautiful game and it's tough to look from that perspective when you are at the receiving end of a Cinderella story like that. What I understand and what I know is that performance probably inspired many amateur footballers, people in lower league, coaches, to say that's possible and that's the magical of cup football," said Motsepe when asked if the result of the cup final against Magesi also contributed to the club's decision.

"But we started the season having given the coaching team the opportunity to take the reins and lead the club to the direction that we saw fit and unfortunately, we started with a stumble.

"We were knocked out of the MTN8 and we had another unfortunate stumble against Polokwane [City] and there was a series of games where we never really saw the consistency that we had hoped for and the club was not trending in the direction we knew the club should be.

"So, the decision was one that was made after compounding of many factors that led to that point and we had to make a decision quickly," he added.
